League board to hold planning retreat
President Allison Cash will convene the board of directors of the League of Southwest Missouri on Thursday (July 26) for a retreat to determine the direction of the League in the coming year. On the agenda is the National League’s goal of each League across the U.S. hosting at least five voter registration events, including one on National Voter Registration Day, Sept. 25.
In Memory
Former treasurer of both the Missouri League and the League of Southwest Missouri, Maryann Crosby, 91, died July 11. She was born Dec. 15, 1920 in Webster County, Nebraska, and lived the last several years in Ozark, Mo. Maryann became an active member as soon as she joined the Southwest Missouri League in 1994. In addition to serving as State League treasurer, Maryann was treasurer of our local League and later served as historian. We extend our sympathies to Maryann’s family.
Learn about Christian County Assessor candidates
A forum for candidates for Christian County assessor will be presented by the Ozark School District at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday (July 24) at the school district administrative office, 302 N. Fourth Street, Ozark.
Cars, cars everywhere
Springfield residents, businesses, commuters and stakeholders will get a chance to comment and ask questions about the planning for improvements to the James River Freeway and Campbell Avenue corridor from 5 to 7 p.m., Tuesday, July 24, at the Library Center, 4653 S. Campbell Avenue. A short presentation is scheduled for 6 p.m.
The interchange of the James River Freeway and Campbell Avenue is one of the key economic centers for the region and is a gateway into Springfield from southern Greene and Christian counties. While the area is thriving, significant traffic congestion and travel delays are prevalent. (Thanks to League member Cindy Stephens for sharing this information.)
Ilga’s story makes an impact
A sold-out house shared the powerful story of Ilga Vise and her remarkable journey to freedom in “Walking Toward America,” a one-women play performed July 14 at The Library Center. League members, who made up a sizable part of the audience, feted Ilga at a post-performance reception at the home of League board member Susan Rubino. The events took the place of our usual Summer Sounding Board for July.

Ilga Vise, left, Annie Meek Montgomery and Sandy Asher answer questions following the performance of “Walking Toward America.”
Ilga and her parents left their home in Latvia in 1944-45 to escape the Russian occupation, spent time in a brutal German labor camp, walked 500 miles across war-torn Germany, then sailed to the United States, and freedom.
Springfield native Annie Meek Montgomery, a New York actress, did a remarkable job portraying Ilga and the other characters in the story. The script was written by Sandy Asher, a former Drury University writer-in-residence.
