LWV Today: Sept 2012 Newletter of League of Women Voters of Southwest Missouri
Invite a friend to Sept. 27 Election Boot Camp, our opening general meeting
Here’s a League meeting for any citizen who wants to learn more before entering the voting booth in November:
Our first general meeting of the year is an Election Boot Camp where League members, their friends and neighbors will learn more about voting basics from Greene County Clerk Richard Struckhoff, and get briefings on the issues that will appear on both the Greene County and statewide ballots.
Our Voter Service committee has planned a top shelf agenda for the meeting, to be held 5:30 p.m. Sept. 27 in the Community Room of Fire Station No. 6, 2620 W. Battlefield.
Besides Clerk Struckhoff, other scheduled speakers are Danette Proctor, Greene County Republican Party, Bill Boone, Greene County Libertarian Party and a Greene County Democratic Party representative. These three will provide an overview of the November ballot.
Statewide ballot issues are part of Election Boot Camp, too. Judge John C.Holstein will explain Constitutional Amendment 5, the proposal to amend Missouri’s nonpartisan court plan. Other speakers will tackle Proposition A, the St. Louis Board of Police Commissioners issue, Prop B, to increase the tobacco tax, and Prop E, to prohibit the formation of a health exchange in Missouri.
Invite a friend because this boot camp will help all of us become informed voters. Voter Service committee members are Allison Cash, Diane Davidson, Joye Norris, Susan Rubino and Ilga Vise.LWV Today, Sept 2012
Learn about our Women Leaders program at September unit meetings
The League is embarking this fall on a key effort to encourage women to become more involved in public service and public policy leadership. Women Leaders: Making Democracy Work is a three-part program that members will learn more about at unit meetings Sept. 17 and 18.
Here’s a quick look:
“Picturing Women Leaders” is a photo contest underway right now. It’s unique because all photos must be taken with a cell phone camera, and the subjects of all photos must be women who are influencing public policy or, for student photographers, campus policy. These might be women who are elected officials but also those who advocate in Jefferson City for a PTA, or those who are serving on a public board or commission . . . or . . . The possibilities are many. Everyone can enter; find details on the League’s Facebook page: League of Women Voters of Southwest Missouri. Deadline is Sept. 21.
On Oct. 4, an evening wine and hors d’oeuvres event features Jessica Grounds, the young, dynamic founder of Running Start, Washington, D.C., an organization that encourages young women to enter politics. Winning entries in the photo contest also will be presented.
On Nov. 10, we’ll bring to town Catherine Gray of Clarity Central, Minneapolis, Minn., for a one-day training workshop, “Speak up, Power up, Step up!” This program is for any woman who’s ready to take that next step in public service, whether it’s volunteering for a campaign, serving on a commission or running for office. Catherine is a founder of The White House Project, based in New York City.
