This month, women across the United States mark the centennial of the final ratification of the 19th Amendment, guaranteeing most women the right to vote. Deemed Women’s Equality Day, Aug. 26 is the official date for the certification of the 19th Amendment, adding it to the U.S. Constitution. The date is also the 100th anniversary of the founding of the League of Women Voters.

In Missouri, League of Women Voters members from nine Leagues will celebrate Saturday, Aug. 29 at 2 p.m. via the videoconference platform Zoom. Our host is the League of Columbia-Boone County.

Author Nicole Evelina will share the story of Virginia Minor, the Missouri suffragist who wanted to vote and took her case all the way to the U.S. Supreme Court in 1874. In 2014 Minor was announced as an inductee to the Hall of Famous Missourians. Her bronze bust is one of 44 on permanent display in the Missouri State Capitol in Jefferson City.

A virtual tour of the historical exhibit “She Got the Vote” from the Boone County History and Culture Center will focus on the fight for the 19th Amendment.

The celebration will also include recognition of the newest League in Missouri, the Tri-Lakes League based in Branson.
