Fair Maps rally

League joins Missouri’s Community Mapping project

League’s participation launches April 29 with nationwide LWV Day of Action for People Powered Fair Maps

The League of Southwest Missouri is part of a statewide nonpartisan effort to increase public input into re-drawing Missouri’s legislative districts. In the coming year these districts will be reviewed and possibly redrawn based on 2020 census data.

On April 29, the League of Women Voters will host events around the United States to increase public awareness and engagement in the redistricting process. Our People Powered Day of Action includes events in Missouri such as a 7 p.m. webinar “Can We Stop Gerrymandering” led by policy expert Sharon Geuea Jones, a Columbia, Mo., attorney. Register for the webinar here.

Redistricting matters because it impacts who has a voice, who can run for office, and who is elected. Citizens in Missouri can provide their input during May and June.

Previously, ordinary Missourians had little input into the legislative redistricting process, which was controlled by political committees. Missouri’s Community Mapping project is using new technologies and tools to allow citizens to create regional maps reflecting their shared interests and concerns. The goal is to help map creators draw fair maps.

The League invites interested groups in Greene, Christian and Webster counties to participate. The League’s goal is for groups in our region to provide at least 25 community maps to the project.
